92 pts. | 2016 Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Clos de la Bousse D’Or, Volnay
Domaine de la Pousse d’ Or – aka The Golden Shoot – sounds like ‘money grows on vines’. I suppose it can ... as long as you plant gold in the soil first. This domaine might have a long history (European long: nine centuries), but things have not always been golden here.
We tend to forget that many of the current high-flying properties have experienced hard times in the past. Pousse d’Or is no exception. It took Gerard Potel to pull the domaine from the quicksand of disrepair in the 60’s and give it new life.
But nothing, and no one, lasts forever. After Potel’s passing, the domaine was sold to the new, and current, owner, Patrick Landanger who, along with his son Benoit, has continued to improve the domaine, acquiring prime vineyard land yet not missing a beat with quality.
Critics and purists alike agree that the Pousse d’Or may be the greatest domaine in Volnay and Bousse d’Or is the flagship wine. It was a huge hit at our tasting last weekend.
The wine: Ripe, dark fruit, but classically styled. Notes of new oak are separate now but will integrate. The wine can be drunk now with the benefit of a couple of hours in a decanter, but recommendation here is to cellar at least a half decade. A lovely wine!

“Very ripe yet attractively fresh aromas are composed by notes of poached plum, violet and black cherry along with elusive whiffs of spice, mandarin orange and VA. The mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is notably finer though less powerful with plenty of minerality on the lingering and understated finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. 2024+.” 92 points | Allen Meadows, Burghound, April 2018
