The 2018 is matured in 20% new oak. It has a well-defined and fragrant bouquet, subtle scents of marzipan and orange pith unfurling with aeration. The well-balanced palate offers orange peel and a touch of bitter lemon on the entry. This delivers more weight and a little more density than the La Gerbotte, finishing with pleasing salinity and a hint of toffee apple. Give it a couple of years in bottle.
The vineyard lies on the slope of the Cote d'Or just south of Premeaux-Prissey village itself. Clos Arlot is a slightly fragmented vineyard, as the land here is shared by a sizable chateau, and vines are planted on both sides of the building. The slope here is steep and faces toward the southeast, where exposure to sunshine aids ripening in the cool Burgundian climate.
The terroir of the Clos de l'Arlot blanc is rugged and rocky. The hillsides are so steep that all work on the vines, often performed with the help of machinery, is done by hand here. Such painstaking work is necessary and worthwile for this vineyard of unique quality and character.
