The 1988 vintage for Sauternes was superb.
The growing season began with a moderate but wet spring which eventually gave way to a hot, dry summer. The heat continued long into September and the dry conditions prevented botrytis from developing until well into October delaying the harvest which began in November when noble rot had finally taken hold. The harvested grapes were rich, sticky sweet and produced wines of great complexity and depth with capacity to age.
