Domaine Vincent & Sophie Morey Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018

Producer note: Vincent Morey runs this roughly 20 ha domaine and succinctly noted that 2018 had "an easy and precocious growing season that, much like 2017, presaged an early harvest and accordingly we began picking on the 3rd of September for a few parcels of pinot as they were beginning to wilt and then attacked the rest, including the whites on the 6th. The fruit was super-clean with good ripeness levels. For example, potential alcohols ranged from 12.5 to 13.5% and this was true for both colors. The vinifications were easy as the extractions almost happened by themselves and since the fruit was so clean, there were no worries about off odors or the like. I like the reds in that they're fresh, generous and pretty easy-going, which should make them ideal for restaurants and for those consumers who enjoy their reds young. The same could largely be said of the whites as well because they too should be approachable young but the upper level wines should have no trouble aging well over the mid-term." Morey said that he bottled the whites in November 2019. Tasting note: A softly exotic and attractively spicy nose offers up notes of tangerine peel, jasmine tea, pear and a hint of oak. The rich and full-bodied flavors possess reasonable mid-palate concentration as well as fine length on the overtly saline-inflected, delineated and well-balanced finale. This is not as dense as it usually is (though it's certainly not dilute) but it should have no trouble amply rewarding extended cellaring.
