"We finished the Chardonnay portion of the tasting with Mark Aubert's favorite wine, the 2012 Chardonnay Lauren Estate, which comes from rich Goldridge soils. There are 1,000 cases of this straw/greenish-colored beauty fashioned from various clones, including the Old Wente, Hyde, Hudson Corton-Charlemagne selection and the Mt. Eden clones. It possesses more of a tannic backbone than its siblings because of its grip. Full-bodied with lots of honeyed citrus, orange marmalade and abundant fruit on the attack and mid-palate, this youthful Chardonnay seems barely touched by its oak aging. All of these 2012s will be irresistible when released in 2014, but should age beautifully for 6-10+ years." - RP 98+

Our first Estate Chardonnay is named after our daughter, Lauren. Located in what we call the “golden hills” of Forestville, the Lauren Vineyard features our favorite clonal selections of Chardonnay, and typically produces the most concentrated wine in the repertoire. The gravelly Goldridge soil series is unique and adds purity and lovely perfumes to this wine.

Our first production of Lauren Estate wine was in 2003, and revealed our definition of perfection. Comprised of four distinct Chardonnay clones, this wine is a hypothetical blend of Sonoma Coast with White Burgundy. Fabulously concentrated and layered with density and extract, the aromatics and mouth feel are profound.

Aubert is a small Chardonnay and Pinot Noir estate that makes wine from single-vineyard sites in Napa Valley and Sonoma. It was founded by Mark and Teresa Aubert in 1999, and is considered to be one of California's cult producers, and is only available through mailing list or from certain restaurants, due to its consistently high scores from critics.

Mark Aubert graduated the University of California Fresno in 1985, and was appointed as the assistant winemaker at Monticello. After meeting the famous winemaker Helen Turley at a tasting group, he became her assistant winemaker at Peter Michael, taking over the reins when she left to start Colgin Cellars. He eventually became the winemaker there as well. At Peter Michael, Aubert became known for his Chardonnay, and decided that he wanted to create his own label focusing on the variety.

The first vintage of Aubert was in 2000 – a Chardonnay sourced from the Ritchie Vineyard in Russian River Valley. It quickly received acclaim for its full-blown, hedonistic style. By 2014, Aubert's portfolio increased to an array of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, sourced from eight different vineyard sites in Russian River. The wines were made at Laird Family Vineyards, a custom crush facility in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, until a winery in 2011 was completed in Calistoga.
