"The 2005 Proprietary Red Lucia Abreu Vineyard seems to have closed down since I tasted it last year even though it is still not in bottle. A blend of 47% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the wine has a dense ruby/purple color, wonderful purity, but jagged tannins and some austerity kept my score from going any higher. It exhibits more texture than last year, but I suspect I caught it on a bad day, and I will reevaluate it in 12 months."

Mark Aubert is on the move, leaving Colgin Winery in favor of working for the Bryant Family Vineyard, while at the same time producing some of the world’s greatest Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. He seems to have a plate filled with both potential and stress. The bad news is that one of his suppliers decided his Chardonnays were just too profound for the Quarry Vineyard, and will no longer sell him fruit from that source, and in 2006, there was so little Reuling available, that cuvee was not made either. In short, there are two fewer Chardonnays for the 2006 vintage! Nevertheless, those who got on the mailing list and secured some of his 2005 Chardonnays have some of the finest Chardonnays ever made in California at their beck and call. Of course, these are made from old Wente clones of Chardonnay, given full malolactic, aged on their lees, and bottled with no clarification.

Aubert is a small Chardonnay and Pinot Noir estate that makes wine from single-vineyard sites in Napa Valley and Sonoma. It was founded by Mark and Teresa Aubert in 1999, and is considered to be one of California's cult producers, and is only available through mailing list or from certain restaurants, due to its consistently high scores from critics.

Mark Aubert graduated the University of California Fresno in 1985, and was appointed as the assistant winemaker at Monticello. After meeting the famous winemaker Helen Turley at a tasting group, he became her assistant winemaker at Peter Michael, taking over the reins when she left to start Colgin Cellars. He eventually became the winemaker there as well. At Peter Michael, Aubert became known for his Chardonnay, and decided that he wanted to create his own label focusing on the variety.

The first vintage of Aubert was in 2000 – a Chardonnay sourced from the Ritchie Vineyard in Russian River Valley. It quickly received acclaim for its full-blown, hedonistic style. By 2014, Aubert's portfolio increased to an array of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, sourced from eight different vineyard sites in Russian River. The wines were made at Laird Family Vineyards, a custom crush facility in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, until a winery in 2011 was completed in Calistoga.
