Domaine Capitain-Gagnerot is in its 9th generation since founding in 1802
, 13 years after storming the Bastille. Just 6 km north of the city of Beaune  situated along the eastern slope of the famed Corton Hill, Domaine Gagnerot was established in 1802, as they began making their own wine from their own vineyards. Starting in the wine business 400 years ago as wine merchants in the 1620s, they shipped barrels of Corton, Chambertin, etc to markets all over Europe. Parcels from the Cotes de Beaune and Cotes de Nuits were added to the domaine, becoming Capitain-Gagnerot and comprising now 16 fully-owned hectares, with several Grand Cru and Premier Cru parcels. 9th generation owner Pierre-François Capitain makes Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that express elegance and purity. Corton hill is the only place in Burgundy with both red and white Grand Crus.

Vineyards: The several Grand Cru, Premier Cru and other parcels are largely centered near the winery on the famed Coteau de Corton, featuring two types of soils: marl limestone ideal for great whites, and clay/limestone which yields reds of great finesse. Farmed with biodynamic principles, now Certified “Agriculture Biologique,” never using herbicides or pesticides. Winemaking: Hand-harvested and sorted, grapes are destemmed before tank vinification. Pinot Noir is native yeast-fermented in open top tanks, punched down twice daily at moderate temperatures, aged in French oak and lightly filtered. Chardonnay finishes fermentation at cool temperatures in barrels (no more than 10% new). Instead of corks, bottles are sealed with the innovative and cellar-worthy “Ardea Seal,” later also adopted by Domaine Ponsot and others to ensure purity. Their house and cellar was German-occupied during WWII. Their Southern-most vineyard in Vosne-Romanee is 68 year old vines.

The wine: Southern-most vineayard in Vosne-Romanee, with 68 year old vines on a gently sloping, rocky parcel.Always large-scaled and powerful, yet with charming and seamless flavors of berry fruit, rose petals and Asian spices.

Robert Parker calls it "an underrated producer whose wines sell for very realistic prices." This wine is Certified Biodynamically farmed, started as merchants in 1620s. Pierre-Francios Capitain is 9th generation winemaker and instead of corks the wine is sealed with the innovative and cellar worthy "Ardea Seal" to insure purity, also adopted by Dom Ponsot and others. This same material is used for heart valve replacement!
