TASTING NOTES

The 2018 is matured in 20% new oak. It has a well-defined and fragrant bouquet, subtle scents of marzipan and orange pith unfurling with aeration. The well-balanced palate offers orange peel and a touch of bitter lemon on the entry. This delivers more weight and a little more density than the La Gerbotte, finishing with pleasing salinity and a hint of toffee apple. Give it a couple of years in bottle.

ABOUT DOMAINE DE L'ARLOT

Clos Arlot is a Premier Cru vineyard at the very southern end of the Cote de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. It is located within the Premeaux-Prissey commune, although it is officially a part of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation that covers this and the neighboring commune. Unusually for this part of Burgundy, the Clos Arlot site is planted to Chardonnay as well as Pinot Noir, making a full-bodied white wine with good minerality, and a delicate red wine with floral characters.

The vineyard lies on the slope of the Cote d'Or just south of Premeaux-Prissey village itself. Clos Arlot is a slightly fragmented vineyard, as the land here is shared by a sizable chateau, and vines are planted on both sides of the building. The slope here is steep and faces toward the southeast, where exposure to sunshine aids ripening in the cool Burgundian climate.

VITICULTURE

The terroir of the Clos de l'Arlot blanc is rugged and rocky. The hillsides are so steep that all work on the vines, often performed with the help of machinery, is done by hand here. Such painstaking work is necessary and worthwile for this vineyard of unique quality and character.

GROWING SEASON

Vintage quality: Excellent (Legendary)

Current condition: Keep

Early reports suggest that Burgundy 2018 could have all the makings of a legendary vintage.

The year was notable for having the hottest, driest growing seasons since the intense heatwave of 2003. Despite a wet winter and spring, perfect weather arrived in time for...

The Weather

After a very rainy winter and early spring, bud break arrived fast in mid-April. Blossoming took place over several days at the end of May, and warm, dry weather set in from mid-June. In Premeaux-Prissey, July was marked by three heavy storms, of which two were hailstorms. The vines were heavily impacted and dramatic mudflows left their mark on the village and its people. The season ended serenely, with a sunny August that allowed the grapes to reach full maturity.

The Harvest

The harvest took place from September 1st to 7th, in excellent weather conditions.

The Grapes

The vines developed early, in unpredictable conditions. Due to the hail, all the grapes were sorted on the vibrating table, even the whites, in order to eliminate any that were dry or damaged. Particular care was taken to optimize a wonderful harvest.

WINEMAKING

The taste of tradition: for the Clos de l'Arlot blanc, aromas and flavours are extracted in the most natural way. It is fermented at low temperature to capture the best of the fruit character of the grapes and express the radiance of the great Chardonnay. Ageing lasts 12 months in oak barrels, with 20% new barrels, and 3 months in vats before bottling. The grapes which come from young vines are vinified separately and make up a cuvée labelled La Gerbotte, Nuits Saint Georges Blanc.
